How to Create a Question and Answers Site in WordPress

If you have a niche audience that keeps asking the same questions, then a Q&A site can be a smart way to turn those repeat questions into a searchable knowledge hub.

Instead of answering the same thing in your comments, email inbox, or Facebook group every week, your readers can post a question once, get answers from the community, and help the next person who searches for it.

We’ve watched sites like Stack Overflow and Quora rank for very specific, long-tail questions that bigger publishers don’t bother covering, and WordPress can do the same thing on a smaller scale.

With the right plugin, you can run a full Q&A community on your own site, keep the SEO value on your domain, and build something readers come back to.

In this guide, I’ll show you step-by-step how to create your own Q&A website that drives traffic, boosts engagement, and ranks well in search results.

How to create a question and answers site in WordPress

Quick Summary: To build a question and answers site, get WordPress hosting (such as Bluehost), install a lightweight theme, and then install the free wpForo plugin. wpForo adds a full Stack Overflow-style Q&A board with categories, voting, and moderation — no code required.

How Much Does It Cost to Build a Question and Answer Website?

The cost can typically range from $100 per year to as high as $30,000 per year. To give you a better idea, we’ve put together a complete guide on how much it really costs to build a website.

My advice? Start small. You can always add more features to your question-and-answer site as it grows and becomes more popular. This way, you can avoid spending a lot of money upfront before your site starts bringing in some profit.

With that in mind, I’m going to show you how you can actually build a successful Q&A website for under $100. Here’s a quick rundown of what I’ll be covering:

Ready? Let’s get started.

Step 1: Setting Up Your Question and Answers Site

To create a WordPress website, you’ll need a domain name and web hosting.

To help you out, we’ve hand-picked some of the best WordPress hosting that you can buy for a question-and-answer website.

Although the WordPress software is free, hosting and domain names are where the costs can really start to add up.

A domain name typically costs $14.99/year, and hosting costs start from $7.99/month. This is a lot for new websites or anyone working with a limited budget.

Luckily, Bluehost has agreed to offer our users a free domain name and a huge discount on web hosting. Basically, you can get started for $2.99 per month.

Bluehost is one of the largest hosting companies in the world and an officially recommended WordPress hosting provider.

They’re also offering our readers a free SSL certificate, so you can accept payments online. This is perfect if you want to make money from your question-and-answer website in the future.

To buy a domain name and hosting, simply go to the Bluehost website in a new browser window and click on the ‘Get Started Now’ button.

Bluehost partner only offer for WPBeginner readers

This will bring you to a pricing page where you can choose a hosting plan for your question-and-answer website.

I recommend choosing a Starter or Business plan, as they’re the most popular web hosting plan among our readers.

Choose Bluehost pricing plan

After selecting a plan, you can click on ‘Continue.’

On the next screen, you’ll need to choose a domain name.

Choose domain name

Ideally, the domain name will be easy to pronounce, spell, and remember.

📝 Need help choosing a domain name for your question-and-answer website? Then, you might want to read our guide on how to choose the best domain name.

After choosing a name, click the ‘Next’ button to continue.

Now, you’ll need to provide your account information, such as your name and email address. After that, you’ll also see optional extras that you can purchase.

I don’t recommend purchasing these extras straight away, as you can always add them later if you need them.

Adding Bluehost package extras when setting up your Q&A site

The next step is to type in your payment information to complete the purchase.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll get an email with instructions on how to log in to your web hosting control panel.

This is your hosting account dashboard where you can manage your Q&A website, including setting up email notifications and asking for WordPress support if you need it. It’s also where you’ll install the WordPress software.

Step 2: Installing WordPress on Your Question and Answer Website

When you sign up with Bluehost using our link, they will automatically install WordPress for you.

You can then simply log in to your WordPress website by clicking on the ‘Edit Site’ button.

Logging in to WordPress by clicking the Edit Site button in Bluehost

If you don’t see a website here, then you can always install WordPress using Bluehost’s installer.

Just click the ‘Add Site’ button under the Websites section to launch the installer.

Bluehost add new site

Once that process is finished, you can log in to the WordPress dashboard by simply going to yoursite.com/wp-admin/ directly from your browser.

If you’re using a different WordPress website host like SiteGround, Hostinger, or HostGator, then you can see our complete guide on how to install WordPress for all the top hosting providers.

Step 3: Selecting a WordPress Theme

Once your WordPress website is up and running, the next step is making it look professional and inviting. That’s where WordPress themes come in.

WordPress themes are professionally designed templates that control how your Q&A site looks and acts.

By default, each WordPress site comes with a basic theme. If you visit your new site, then you’ll see something like this:

An example of a default WordPress theme

This is a generic WordPress theme with limited features, so you’ll need to replace it.

There are many different premium and free WordPress business themes to choose from. Alternatively, you can explore the niche industry and multipurpose WordPress theme options.

Once you’ve chosen a theme, please see our step-by-step guide on how to install a WordPress theme.

If you want a built-in FAQ design around your forum — best for readers who want a marketing homepage as well as a Q&A board — you can use a WordPress page builder plugin such as SeedProd instead of a standard theme.

SeedProd's homepage

SeedProd is the best drag-and-drop WordPress page builder and comes with built-in templates that you can use to build a professionally designed question-and-answer website.

It even has a ready-made FAQ section that you can add to any page using drag and drop.

A SeedProd page builder, with an FAQ section

Plus, it comes with an AI website builder that can generate an entire, custom website for you in less than 60 seconds.

We’re big fans of SeedProd and have actually used it to design many of our partner websites, including the WP Charitable, WPForms, and Duplicator sites. Even the SeedProd website is designed using SeedProd!

💡 Want to learn more? Then we’ve written a detailed SeedProd review that goes into detail about our experiences with this popular page builder plugin.

Step 4: Install Your Q&A Forum Software

The easiest way to create a question and answers site in WordPress, is by using wpForo

It strikes a good balance between staying lightweight and giving you Stack Overflow-style features like voting, user reputation, and threaded answers, without bogging your site down. It also gets frequent updates, which matters for a plugin that handles user-generated content.

The wpForo WordPress question and answer, and forum plugin

This plugin comes with a built-in Q&A layout that lets you turn your site into a professional, interactive community where visitors can post questions, upvote answers, and mark questions as solved or unsolved.

I’ve tested several Q&A plugins over the years. Some are too simple, and others are so heavy they’ll slow your site to a crawl. wpForo strikes the right balance because it’s lightweight but still gives you that professional Stack Overflow feel right out of the box.

A finished wpForo Q&A site showing solved labels and upvoted answers

Even better, you can download this plugin for free from the official WordPress.org repository. This lets you add a high-quality Q&A board to your site without spending a cent.

To start, simply go ahead and install the free wpForo plugin. If you haven’t done this before, then our beginner’s guide on how to install a WordPress plugin walks you through the entire process.

Step 5: Configure wpForo as a Q&A Layout

Upon activation, wpForo automatically creates a default forum page at yoursite.com/community/ using the [wpforo] shortcode.

wpForo also pre-populates that page with a starter Main Category and a Main Forum. This is great because it means your online community page isn’t a blank white screen. I really like that wpForo handles all this initial setup for you.

You just need to tweak these default settings to transform the standard forum layout into a true Q&A site.

To see the current layout in action, head over to yoursite.com/community/.

An example of a basic question and answer site, created using wpForo

You’ll see your starter forum complete with the wpForo navigation tabs, the Main Category panel, and the Main Forum.

⚠️ If your site already has a /community/ page, then wpForo will create the page at /community-2/ instead.

If you don’t like the word ‘community’ in your web address, don’t worry. I’ll show you how to change it in a later step.

This is the step that turns your generic forum into a Stack Overflow-style Q&A site.

In wpForo, the layout (such as Q&A, Threaded, or Extended) is set at the category level, rather than the forum level.

Every forum automatically inherits the layout of its parent category. This means you can simply change the settings in the Main Category, and your entire forum will turn into a Q&A site.

To do this, go to wpforo » Forums

How to add a forum to your WordPress website

Here, you’ll see the default Main Category and Main Forum.

Simply click the ‘Edit’ icon next to the Main Category panel.

Clicking the Edit icon on the wpForo Main Category

This takes you to a screen where you can edit this category.

The original Main Category label is just a placeholder, so I recommend replacing it with something more descriptive like ‘Ask the Community’ or ‘WordPress Questions,’ depending on your Q&A site’s topic.

How to rename your Q & A board

Under ‘Forum Options,’ check the box next to ‘Use as Category’ if it isn’t already selected.

After that, open the ‘Category Layout’ dropdown and select ‘QA’ from the list of options.

Selecting the Category Layout option for the wpForo Q&A board

This tells wpForo to display this category as a question and answer board. This adds specific features like solved and unsolved labels, and the option to upvote helpful posts.

With that done, click the Update button at the bottom to save your changes.

Step 6: Customize Your First Q&A Board

Next, it’s a good idea to give your Main Forum a more meaningful name so visitors know exactly where to post.

To do this, go back to wpForo » Forums and click the pencil ‘Edit’ icon next to Main Forum.

Customizing the forum on your WordPress website or blog

You can now replace ‘Main Forum’ with a better title. I usually go with something short and descriptive like ‘General Questions’ or ‘Get Help.’ In my experience, simple names work best because visitors instantly understand what the board is for.

I also recommend adding a short description to provide more information about the types of questions visitors should ask. This description will appear right under the forum name on your community page.

Adding a description under the wpForo forum name field

Once you’re happy with the changes, click the Update button to save your forum.

Now, if you visit your community page, you’ll see your renamed forum sitting inside its renamed category, ready for its very first question.

A preview of the customized wpForo Q&A forum on the front end

It’s as easy as that! The core structure of your Q&A site is now live.

Step 7: Choose a Color Scheme for Your Community

Now that your Q&A forum is up, it’s time to make it match the rest of your site so it feels like a natural part of your brand, rather than a bolted-on third-party tool.

To make this change, go to wpForo » Settings and select the ‘Colors & Styles’ card.

Customizing your question and answers website

wpForo comes with six predefined color sets. Let’s walk through each one so you can pick the best fit for your site:

  • Default (Blue): This is the standard look. It should feel familiar to anyone who’s used Stack Overflow or a support forum, making it a safe choice for most sites.
  • Red: A bold, attention-grabbing palette that works well if your brand has a high-energy feel or a red logo.
  • Green: This has a calmer, more natural feel. I find it fits perfectly with wellness, finance, or eco-focused sites.
  • Orange: Warm and friendly. This is a great choice if you want your community to feel inviting rather than clinical.
  • Gray: A neutral, professional palette. I usually pick this one when the rest of the site is already very colorful, so the forum doesn’t clash.
  • Dark: A modern ‘dark mode’ look. I often use this on technical sites since many readers spend their day in code editors and prefer designs that are easier on the eyes.

To apply any of these color schemes, simply select its accompanying radio button.

How to customize your question and answer board

After making your selection, don’t forget to click the Save Options button at the bottom of the page to apply your new look.

Step 8: Manage User Registration and Permissions

A Q&A site only works if your visitors can actually register and post questions. By default, wpForo uses your existing WordPress user system, so anyone who registers on your site can also post in the forum.

If you haven’t enabled user registration on your WordPress site, then you’ll need to activate that before going any further.

To control who can ask questions, who can answer, and who can moderate, go to wpForo » Usergroups in your dashboard.

The wpForo Usergroups settings panel showing the five default user roles

You’ll see five built-in usergroups: Admin, Customer, Guest, Moderator, and Registered. Each one maps to your standard WordPress user roles, but with its own set of specific forum permissions. I usually just use the default settings since they’re a good fit for most websites.

For example, by default Guests (visitors who haven’t registered) can read the forum but can’t post. This is the setup most communities want. I typically don’t recommend allowing guests to post unless you have very strict comment moderation and anti-spam settings in place.

However, if you want to review or change any of these default settings, simply hover over the role and click its ‘Edit’ link.

Editing a wpForo user role from the Usergroups screen

You’ll now see a screen with all the different actions that this user role can perform.

To change any of these, just check or uncheck the boxes next to each permission.

Customizing user-group permissions for the wpForo Q&A forum

Don’t worry about getting the permissions perfect right away. You can always adjust these later as your community grows and you learn how your members actually behave.

💡 If you want to take registration even further by tying forum access to paid plans or member tiers, our guide on the best WordPress membership plugins covers several options that pair perfectly with wpForo.

Step 9: Publish and Test Your New Q&A Forum

A community page that nobody can find isn’t very useful.

To start getting traffic and questions, you’ll need to add your Q&A board to your WordPress navigation menu so visitors can easily find it from any page on your site.

An example of a WordPress navigation menu

The process for adding this link will vary depending on whether you’re using a traditional WordPress theme or a newer theme that has Full Site Editing (FSE) enabled.

The good news is that we cover both methods in-depth in our guide on how to add a navigation menu in WordPress.

Once you’ve added the link, I recommend visiting your site as a logged-out user just to make sure the ‘Community’ or ‘Questions’ link is visible and leads to the right place.

This is the fun part. Before you tell the world about your new community, you should post a sample question yourself to confirm everything is working exactly as expected.

To check, go to the community page on your site, click into your Q&A forum, and then click the ‘Add topic’ button.

Adding questions to a Q&A board

Next, fill in a question title and a description.

I recommend using a real question your audience might actually ask. That very first sample question can end up getting genuine answers from early visitors before you even start promoting the page.

It’s a great way to ‘seed’ the forum with high-quality content.

A test question posted on the wpForo Q&A forum

To make sure everything is perfect, I usually try voting on the question or posting an answer from a second user account.

Once you’ve confirmed that everything works, you’re ready for real traffic.

Next Steps to Improve Your Q&A Site

Getting your forum live is the first step. The four add-ons below are the ones I set up next, because they’re what turns a working Q&A site into a healthy community.

Add FAQ Schema with All in One SEO

Every question and answer is a potential rich result in Google.

To make that happen, your pages need FAQ schema markup. This is just a bit of behind-the-scenes code that helps Google identify your Q&A content so it can display it as expandable boxes directly in the search results.

A question and answer section, in the Google search results

The easiest way to add this is with All in One SEO (AIOSEO)

I use this SEO plugin on every site I run because it makes technical tasks like this incredibly straightforward.

The All in One SEO (AIOSEO) WordPress plugin

If you’re just getting started with the plugin, then be sure to follow our full AIOSEO setup guide. It walks you through the initial configuration, step-by-step.

Improve Your Site’s Email Deliverability

wpForo sends notification emails whenever someone registers on your site, resets their password, or deletes their account.

This is the glue that holds your community together. If these emails end up in spam folders, new members won’t be able to join, and existing users may end up locked out of their accounts.

The solution is to send your WordPress emails using a proper SMTP service. This connects WordPress to a trusted email provider like SendLayer, Brevo, or Gmail so your messages land in the inbox rather than the spam folder.

In my opinion, WP Mail SMTP is the best SMTP plugin as it works with the major free email providers right out-of-the-box.

The WP Mail SMTP WordPress plugin

If your forum grows large enough to send hundreds of emails per day, the paid version unlocks higher tier providers and better deliverability tracking.

Using Analytics to Grow Your Q&A Community

Once questions start rolling in, you’ll want to know which threads are attracting the most traffic, which categories your readers care about most, and how much time visitors are spending on your Q&A site.

With that in mind, I recommend installing MonsterInsights. It connects your Q&A site to Google Analytics and displays detailed reports directly in your WordPress dashboard.

Instead of getting lost in complicated spreadsheets, you can see exactly which questions are driving the most visitors to your site, and keeping them there.

The MonsterInsights Google Analytics plugin for WordPress

If you’re just getting started, then be sure to follow our guide on how to install Google Analytics in WordPress. It walks you through the entire installation process step-by-step.

How to Stop Forum Spam in its Tracks

Q&A forums are a magnet for spam, especially once they start ranking in Google. If you don’t stay on top of it, your helpful community can quickly get buried under junk links and bots.

Thankfully, wpForo comes with a ton of built-in anti-spam features. To review these settings, go to wpForo » Settings and select the ‘Spam Protection’ card.

How to protect your question and answer site against spammers and bots

You can now work your way through these settings and enable features like automatically banning users when spam is suspected, and requiring a minimum number of posts before a user can post links or upload files.

Frequently Asked Questions About Building a Q&A Site in WordPress

I get asked the same handful of questions every time I help someone set up a Q&A community on their WordPress site. Most of them come down to skill level, cost, and how to keep the forum healthy as it grows.

That said, here’s the questions that come up most often.

Do I need any coding skills to set up a Q&A site in WordPress?

No, you don’t need any coding experience at all. With wpForo, you can create categories and forums by simply filling in a few fields and selecting an option from a dropdown. If you can write a blog post, then you have all the skills you need to run a successful Q&A community in WordPress.

Is wpForo really free, or will I need to pay for premium later?

The free version of wpForo has everything you need to run a fully functional Q&A site, including a dedicated question and answer layout. You won’t find any premium-only features that prevent you from launching a professional community right now.

Will adding a Q&A site slow down my WordPress website?

In my experience, wpForo adds a small amount of overhead, but nothing dramatic if you’re using a fast WordPress hosting provider. In fact, I’ve found that wpForo is much lighter than many other forum plugins that try to pack in too many features.

If you ever notice your overall site speed dropping, then take a look at our roundup of the best WordPress caching plugins, to give your site an extra boost.

How do I prevent spam questions on my Q&A forum?

wpForo includes a dedicated security section that helps you lock things down without automatically needing extra plugins. It also integrates perfectly with the Akismet anti-spam plugin, which you likely already have installed on your WordPress site.

You can access these features by going to wpForo » Settings and selecting the Spam Protection card. You can also add CAPTCHA in WordPress for extra security.

How do I moderate questions and answers on my Q&A site?

wpForo gives you a built-in moderation panel in your WordPress dashboard, where you can review every question and answer posted to your site. From there, you can approve new posts, edit them to fix typos or formatting, or remove anything that breaks your community rules.

You can also mark the most helpful reply as the best answer, which pins it to the top of the thread so future visitors see it first. This is a great way to reward your most active members and keep your forum useful for everyone.

Keep in mind that moderation is different from spam prevention. Spam tools like Akismet and Sucuri block automated junk before it reaches your site. Moderation is the day-to-day quality control you do to keep real user posts accurate, on-topic, and friendly.

  1. Questions and answers websites is one of the website type to build online community and support portal for people online. It’s fosters collaboration and unity among members, users easily get access to answers for their Questions.
Please, I will like to ask if Q/A websites are still valuable and relevant in the era of AI generative contents ?

    • Yes, they are very valuable. From my perspective, even in the age of AI, it’s primarily about sharing data and experiences that AI, for example, does not have. On the other hand, it’s also about creating a community and friendships on the web, which will make users want to return to the site. Therefore, from my point of view, it has several benefits. Sharing information, building a community, and also creating returning users. No AI can replace this yet. And it’s mainly about real experiences and not always just bare facts.

      • Thanks you Mr. Jiří Vaněk, for your insightful comment. You’ve highlighted some crucial points that resonate with me. The importance of sharing real experiences, building a community, and creating a space where users feel connected and want to return is invaluable. In the age of AI, these human elements can’t be replicated, and they offer a unique way to engage users. I’ll definitely keep these factors in mind as I work on my own projects. Your perspective is very helpful!

    • I think making a question answer website is still very much relevant in the age of ai.
This is because this q/a website will help in catering the need and aspirations of your business and will help in making engagement around the business you provide.
this will eventually help in brand making and conversions.
ai at best uses as an assistant and not as a standalone tool to accomplish tasks.

  2. AnsPress is such a powerful plugin that we would be able to make a stack overflow like website on our own.
in stack overflow any one can post a question and anyone can answer the question just by logging in.
will this feature be available in this plugin or will we need to have some custom code snippet to make that possible?

  3. I am working on making a forum for my course website where students can ask questions and anyone can give answers to it.
I want it to be like a discussion forum which can ensure website engagement.
I think anspress can suffice my need.
however, I don’t want it to be a standalone website rather a navigation tab in the main website with the name forum.
is there a possibility to make one with ansPress plugin?
or could you please recommend any other ?

    • You can do that, you would have normal homepage and you can link to the question and answer section in your menu as you would any other page on your site.

    • Thank you for letting us know, we will be sure to take a look at updating this article when we are able.

  4. After activating the plugin I am only getting DW Question Answer page.
The DWQA Ask Question page is not reflecting.
What am I mising over here?

    • If I’m understanding your question correctly, you may need to clear your cache if it is a display issue. If you mean you’re not able to list the questions then you would need to reach out to the plugin’s support.

  5. This article is very useful and informative …………..your way of writing is really easy and understandable I learn so much from your blog thanks for sharing such an informative article

  6. Why this form of Q&A versus a traditional discussion forum such as BBPress? What are the pros and cons of each?

    Bob

    • The main bonus of using the plugin from this article is the option to upvote specific answers while a forum is not required to answer questions. It is personal preference for what to use for what you’re trying to achieve.

      Admin

    • While you could make something similar without using plugins, it would require a large number of customizations to make it a simple process for your users which the plugin allows.

      Admin

  7. Such a more valuable information. I also read your all Blogs. This is awesome!! I’ve always enjoyed reading your blog. Keep writing such kind of info on your page. I am really impressed with this type of writing. Thanks for sharing with us.

  8. This is helpful but when I generate a new question the formatting goes all wrong. I have a transparent header and menu and because the questions is generated on a white background I lose this visibility. Likewise as I edit a question page to make it look right as soon as I generate another question the format reverts back. How do I overcome this?

    • You would want to reach out to your specific theme to see if this is a conflict between your theme and the plugin.

      Admin

  9. Hello,

I would like to enable the option of adding comments and answers without a need to be logged in and without the requirement for an email address. How can I do it? Right now to add anything person needs to give the email.

    Thanks in advance.
    Anna

    • You would want to go into the plugin’s settings to allow anonymous posting or comments

Good Job. Checking my site http:// Just kiding, this isn’t a spam comment :). Is my feedback :)

  24. Does Wordpress.com support downloading plugins and installing them? I saw that it doesn’t. Does that mean all the plugins that are mentioned are for wordpress.org?

  25. Thanks for this info
What is the main benefits with this (or this kind of) plugin compared with a forum plugin (like Simplepress) – apart that Q&A obviously is simpler to setup?

    • It depends on how you use a forum plugin. If you want to use it to create Q&A site, then you would need to set it up in a way so that your users can quickly understand what you want them to do. Using a Q&A specific plugin takes the guess work out of the equation and provides a better user experience.

  26. I have also been looking for something like this. Have not installed yet, but it wasn’t clear if Q&A could be “viewed” without a login. I would want everyone to view the information but have a login to ask a question or answer. Could this be integrated with a plugin that allows login via Facebook, Twitter, acccount, etc.?

  27. Great share I was looking something for free. There is a theme by wp-answer.com which allows importing of question and answers from Yahoo! answers.

  28. This plug in is perfect for my site. I followed your directions but the pages are not appearing on my site? Any suggestions on what might be wrong?

    • You can also create your own pages. Simply create two new pages and then go to plugin settings and use one page as Ask question page and the other page for listing questions.

  29. I had a Q&A page on our site for a while (plugin from WPMU) but it was constantly hit with spam. How does this plugin deal with it? Unchecking “anyone can register?” Then what?

  30. It would be nice if you could remove the questions category and tags option. Just have the title and question.

  31. Wow, perfect timing, as I have been debating between a forum and this kind of a plugin for a new site. This helped make my decision :)

After installing and testing, I did find a couple minor bugs with the theme I am using, but this plugin is in it’s first version I believe, and that is bound to happen. Overall it looks great. Also, going through the support questions it sounds as if they are working on some more specific features as people ask questions or find issues. I see a great future for this plugin… cheers!
